This section of the guide is using Academic Search Premier for demonstration, and may have slightly different options compared to other databases. If you have questions about the specific options available in a database or would like assistance using the new interface, please contact us.
You can search for articles within a specific journal or publication using EBSCOhost databases in several ways. To search for a journal or publication from the Advanced Search page, follow the instructions below.
From the Advanced Search page
- Switch to the Publications tab below the search fields.
- Decide how you want to search:
- Alphabetical: Search for the beginning of the publication title OR the exact title. This is best used if you know the title of the publication you are interested in.
- Match any words: If you know part of the title of the publication, or you are looking for publications that have a specific word or words in the title, use this search.
- Subject and description: search for publications that cover specific topics, disciplines, or subjects.
- Once you've decided how you want to search (this example will be using Alphabetical), enter your search term(s). Note that this search will NOT accept ISSNs/ISBNs as valid search terms.
- You should see a list of results that match your search.
- If the publication has full text options available in the database, you'll see a green check mark and a line of text below the title that specifies the different full text options available, such as "PDF" or "HTML full text".
- To view more information about the publication, or navigate to an article based on the volume or issue, click on the title of the publication. This is called the 'Detailed Record'. For information about how to navigate this section, view the "From the Detailed Record" section below.
- To add the publication as a limiter on your search, use the checkbox to select the title, and then use the "Add to search" button to add it to your search in a previously empty search field.
If you only have a publication's standard number (ISSN or ISBN), include the number, without dashes, as a search term in it's own search field, with the field drop down set to ISSN or ISBN, as applicable.
To access the detailed record, you will need to view an article from the results of the search and use the instructions listed under "From an article in the database".
From an article in the database
- From an article's record detail page, click on the linked Source.
- You'll be brought back to the advanced search page, and should see a detailed record for the journal. This includes a description, publisher information, and other bibliographic details that have been recorded for the publication.
- There are three different ways for you to proceed with browsing the journal from this point:
- Select the journal and add it to your search.
- Use the checkbox below the title and description to select the publication, and then use the "Add to search" button on the right to add the publication to the next empty search field in your advanced search.
- Use the "Search within this publication" search field to perform a basic keyword search for articles in the publication.
- Below the title and description, there is a search field. You can enter a search string into this field to search for articles published in the publication.
- Navigate to a specific volume/issue using the All issues & articles menu.
- To the right of the bibliographic information, there will be a list of years or volumes that have been indexed by the database. These can be expanded to navigate to a specific issue.
- Once you've found the issue you'd like to browse, select it from the menu to view a list of all of the indexed articles in the database.
- Select the journal and add it to your search.
From the Detailed Record
The detailed record page can be reached from several different areas in the database, or directly from the Library's catalog. This page has several different options to search and browse a publication, which are listed below.
- Select the journal and add it to your search.
- Use the checkbox below the title and description to select the publication, and then use the "Add to search" button on the right to add the publication to the next empty search field in your advanced search.
- Use the "Search within this publication" search field to perform a basic keyword search for articles in the publication.
- Below the title and description, there is a search field. You can enter a search string into this field to search for articles published in the publication.
- Navigate to a specific volume/issue using the All issues & articles menu.
- To the right of the bibliographic information, there will be a list of years or volumes that have been indexed by the database. These can be expanded to navigate to a specific issue.
- Once you've found the issue you'd like to browse, select it from the menu to view a list of all of the indexed articles in the database.
