About

The Archives Instruction Room is intended to facilitate hands-on exploration of historical primary source materials collected by the Norwich University Archives and Special Collections. The room is located adjacent to the Archives reading room, staff offices, and archival storage areas. This proximity to collections and staff offers faculty a unique opportunity to incorporate archival resources into courses.

Room Guidelines

Visitors to the Archives Instruction Room will need to follow these guidelines to help ensure the safety of our historical collections:

  • The 5th floor of the library is a secured space. Stairwell doors to the floor remain locked at all times and are equipped with doorbells. Elevator access to the floor can be enabled during classes scheduled in the Archives Instruction Room.
  • No food, gum, or chewing tobacco is permitted on the 5th floor at any time. Drinks with tight-fitting lids are permitted.
  • No pens are permitted when working with archival collections and exclusive use of pencils in the space is strongly preferred. Pencils are always available to borrow.
  • Students and other visitors will need to use the provided cubbies and lockers to stow bags before interfacing with archival collections.

Room Reservations

Faculty may choose to bring classes to the Archives Instruction Room for one or more sessions throughout the semester, or may request a semester-long reservation. All bookings are on a first-come, first serve basis, subject to staff and room availability. In addition, any faculty using the room must:

  • Meet with one of our archivists to discuss their needs and ensure a good fit with the space and collections.
  • Agree to abide by the above room guidelines and enforce them for students.
  • For semester-long reservations, demonstrate that they plan to have the class use archival or rare book collections at least twice during the semester.
