What is a Literature Review?

A literature review is an overview of previous research on a topic that critically evaluates and compares what has already been published on a particular topic.  This allows you to provide context to the research and scholarly literature on your topic.

Steps for Conducting a Literature Review

  • Your literature review should be guided by your research question.
  • Develop keywords or subject terms for your research question.
  • Try different keyword combinations when searching the databases.
  • Carefully review your search results.
  • Searching is a cyclical process where you will run searches, review results, modify searches, run again, review again.
