Newton outlines several of the challenges that general education revision committees face and discusses four key issues that "reformers" face when designing a revised general education program: unity versus fragmentation (knowledge), breadth versus depth (student learning), generalist versus specialist (faculty competence), and Western culture versus cultural diversity (content). The author also propose three models of revised general education programs and details how each model responds to each of the four "tensions" in general education revision.
This federal report was created by The National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement and the Department of Education. It calls on higher education institutions in the United States to re-envision civic missions and learning objectives so as to adequately prepare students to become productive and engaged citizens of the United States. This report address concerns of the nation's current ebb of civic engagement and outlines specific changes that higher education institutions can do to affect positive change in their students.
This document describes the six motions that the Gen Ed Committee passed regarding the new LD 101 course. These recommendations were passed on to the UCC for review.
This Action Paper outlines several recommendations from the UCC in June 2002. Their first recommendation was the creation of a General Education Task Force in order to re-evaluate the goals of the current General Education Program. The second recommendation was the hiring of a General Education Program Director in order to spearhead assessment efforts required by NEASC. It is unclear from this copy of the memo whether or not President Schneider approved the recommendations of the Provost and the UCC.
