Request Materials from Other Libraries

A guide to using our interlibrary loan (ILL) service

Who May Use ILL?

Faculty, staff, and students. Please note that interlibrary loan of books and other physical items is only available for ON CAMPUS students, faculty, and staff. Borrowers who are unable to visit campus in person to pick up and return ILL materials are encouraged to contact a local library for assistance with obtaining books not held by the Kreitzberg Library.

What Can Be Requested?

We will attempt to borrow all types of materials, but not everything can always be filled. Many lending libraries will not loan reference books, audiovisual materials, and other special formats.

Textbooks & Required Readings
Please do not rely on ILL for textbooks and course readings. Requests for textbooks and required course readings for courses currently offered at Norwich cannot be filled. These materials can be difficult to obtain and even if available, they only circulate for short time periods and are subject to recall.

Loan Periods & Renewals

  • Books & Other Returnable Materials

Due dates for books and other returnable materials are determined by the lending library. All returnable material will have a book band attached to it with a due date; please do not remove this band.

  • Articles

Articles are delivered electronically to your ILL Account and do not need to be returned. Be sure to save articles received as they are only available in your ILL Account for 60 days.

  • Renewals

If an ILL is not yet overdue, you can renew online through your ILL Account. If you have trouble or your item is overdue, please email nuill@norwich.edu or call x2182.

Returning Materials

Materials should be returned on time to the book drop located in the entry vestibule (open 24 hours). If ILL materials are late, you will receive overdue notices as a reminder. You will be billed for the replacement cost ($50 minimum) of materials over 30 days late, but this will be refunded if the item is returned within 30 days. The ILL office may also suspend future ILL privileges if materials are late.

Copyright & Photocopying

The Norwich University Library follows current copyright guidelines when requesting a copy of material. We request no more than five articles in a calendar year from the most recent five-year period of a given journal title. If this limit is exceeded, we place requests through an article delivery service. All supplied copies include a notice of copyright.
