Search Tips

When using Google or Google Scholar, your search syntax will be slightly different from a typical research database. Here are some tips:

  • To search for results that exist on a specific website, prefix the website's domain with site:. For example, if you wanted to find an specific standard published by NIST, you might add site:nist.gov to your search limit your search to results on NIST's website. Make sure that you don't add any spaces between the site: operator and the domain, as it can cause your search to fail.
  • To find a phrase, like red team, you can surround the phrase with quotes to search for the exact phrase: "red team" site:cisa.gov
  • To exclude a term from your search, prefix the term with a -. For example, if you were doing a search on substitution ciphers, but were only interested in polyalphabetic ciphers, you might search for substitution cipher -monoalphabetic to remove results that refer to monoalphabetic ciphers.
  • To specify a specific date range, you can prefix a date in YYYY-MM-DD format with before: or after: to only locate results published before or after a specific date, or between two dates. If you only use a year, after: will default to results published on or after 01-01 of the following year, while before: will default to results to 01-01 of the specified year.
    • Find results published after January 1, 2022: after:2021 or after: 2022-01-01
    • Find results published before December 31, 2024: before:2025 or before:2024-12-31
    • Find results published between 2022 and 2024: after:2021 before:2025

Databases that include Conference Proceedings and Grey Literature

What is a report?

Reports present detailed information on a topic in an organized format, typically detailing the results of research or activities completed by a group or organization. Reports usually present information for a specific audience, but may not present a specific position or argument on a topic.

What are conference proceedings?

Conference proceedings vary in their level of detail, but typically document the papers and presentations shared during a professional conference, symposium, or meeting sponsored by a society or organization. Conference proceedings often document ongoing research, emerging trends, and other changes in the field or industry.

Conference proceedings are published in many different ways; some conference proceedings are indexed in databases, while others are published directly on the sponsoring organization's website.

What is a white paper?

White papers are reports or guides from an organization or company that details the organization's opinion and findings on a complex topic or issue. Unlike a report, white papers present a specific position on a topic and advocate for the adoption of a specific solution or response.

White papers are typically published on the publishing organization's website.

What is grey literature?

Grey literature (sometimes spelled as "gray literature") are publications that do not utilize traditional publishing or distribution channels; reports, white papers, government documents, and many other publications are considered grey literature. While some grey literature archives exist, most grey literature is hosted by the publishing organization.
