Kreitzberg Library Privacy Policy

The Kreitzberg Library is committed to the privacy of the students, faculty, staff, and visitors we serve. Our position on privacy is guided by the American Library Association Code of Ethics which states, “we protect each library user’s right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.” Both it and Vermont law regarding library patron records support our professional and ethical commitment to patron privacy and prevent us from reporting on individuals’ use of our services or collections.

Patron Record Privacy

Our library management system (OCLC WorldShare Management Services) contains records including borrowers’ names, addresses, and other identifying information, which is used only to link patrons with the materials they have checked out. For each item checked out to a patron, the library maintains the following information:

  • Item details (title, barcode number).
  • Date checked out and date due.
  • Number of renewals.

Staff or student workers will not disclose the following:

  • The identity of a patron who has a particular item checked out.
  • Titles checked out to a particular patron.
  • Personal information of any patron.

Judicial Orders or Warrants

If the Kreitzberg Library receives a valid and enforceable judicial order or warrant for library records, we will do the following:

  • Request identification from the officer or person serving the judicial order or warrant.
  • Inform the Executive Director of Library, Archives, and Museum about the judicial order or warrant for further action.

Reference Inquiries

We will not disclose the personal data we collect from users during reference interviews, instruction sessions, or other activities to any third parties except where required for system-related needs (e.g., third-party library service providers who have contractually agreed to maintain user confidentiality) or to fulfill the individual user’s service request.

Library Website Cookies

The Kreitzberg Library website is hosted on the Springshare platform, which writes cookies in your browser and stores your IP address and browser information in server logs used to generate anonymous usage statistics. The Library also uses Google Analytics to understand how our website is being used and improve our interfaces and services. We do not transmit any information to other third parties.

Third Party Service Providers

Most of the Library’s systems and services are hosted by third-party vendors. While the Library expects contracted information service providers to protect the identities of individual users, we are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third parties. Privacy policies for selected service providers are listed below:
