Borrowing Materials

Can I check out materials?

You may check out materials if you are:

  • a Norwich University student, faculty or staff member
  • a former student of Norwich University
  • a member of the Friends of Kreitzberg Library (FOKL)
  • a guest (non-Norwich faculty, staff or student) living in the local area
  • a faculty member from a Vermont Consortium of Academic Libraries (VCAL) institution

Students, faculty and staff need their Norwich University ID card. Alumni, FOKL members and community guests will be given a library card. VCAL faculty members must bring a valid VCAL library card from their home library.

What can I check out?

You may check out:

  • Books
  • Government documents (excluding the US Code, and rare or valuable documents)
  • DVDs and videos
  • CD-ROMs (with some exceptions)
  • Audiobook CDs

Sorry. These need to stay in the building:

  • Reference materials
  • Periodicals
  • Microfiche or microfilm
  • Maps (excluding topographic maps)
  • Indexes
  • Special Collections materials
  • Hourly reserve items (may be checked out but cannot leave the library)

How long can I keep materials?

Books

  • Students (except CoPS Grads): 45 days
  • Staff: 45 days
  • Faculty: 90 days
  • CoPS Grads: 90 days

Other Materials and Exceptions

  • DVDs and videos: 45 days
  • Popular Reading: 45 days
  • Reserves:  (2- or 4-hour in-library use only)

What if I need to keep materials longer?

Sign in to your online account to renew online. You can also email library@norwich.edu for assistance. There is a maximum limit of ten renewals for all checked out items. If you need to use an item beyond the renewal limit, you must bring it to the library to extend the loan period.

Materials borrowed from other libraries can be renewed as long as the due date has not passed. Renew online or by contacting the ILL department at nuill@norwich.edu.

How should I return materials?

Please bring returns to a staff member at the Library Services Desk or drop off materials in the book drop located in the entry vestibule (open 24 hours). Materials can also be returned by mail.

Requesting a tracking number is highly recommended, as we cannot waive fines for lost materials without proof that those materials were delivered to campus.

If you are unable to return your materials by mail, please contact the Circulation Manager, Sarah LaForce (slaforce@norwich.edu), to make alternate arrangements.

For questions about returning or renewing Interlibrary Loan materials, contact the ILL office at nuill@norwich.edu.

Can I give materials I've borrowed to someone else?

Please don't give materials you've checked out to anyone else! You will be held responsible should the item become lost or damaged.

Is there a fee if I return materials late?

We don't charge overdue fees, but please return or renew materials on time! Our system sends out automated overdue courtesy reminders by email 7, 14, and 30 days past the due date.

After 30 days, the system will automatically declare the item lost and charge a replacement fee ($50 minimum). Your checkout privileges may be suspended if library materials aren't returned.

What happens if I lose an item I've checked out?

Students

If materials have not been returned within 30 days past the due date OR before the end of the Spring Semester, a minimum $50 replacement fee for each item lost will be charged to your library account.

After replacement fee charges have been billed through the Bursar's office, they can only be removed when the item(s) are returned or an exact replacement has been purchased.

Refunds for returned materials that have already been billed through the Bursar's office can only applied within six months of the billing date.

What if the item was lost in the mail?
Sorry, you are still responsible for the replacement cost unless you can provide a tracking number to confirm delivery.

Faculty & Staff

A minimum $50 replacement fee will be charged for each lost or damaged item not returned after 30 days past the due date. At this point, you will receive an email from the Circulation Manager to inquire about returns or replacements. The Library Director reserves the right to temporarily or permanently suspend borrowing privileges if no attempt to return materials has been made.

Interlibrary Loan Materials

Replacement fees for lost or damaged materials borrowed from other libraries may be charged at the discretion of the lending library.

Please direct all inquiries about billing and replacement procedures to the Circulation Manager (slaforce@norwich.edu).

How can I suggest items for you to purchase?

We welcome suggestions for additions to our collection, although budgets will not always guarantee their purchase. To submit a suggestion, just email us.
