Abbreviated Journal Names for AMA Citations

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has a searchable list of health sciences journals and includes the correct AMA abbreviations that are essential for your citations.

  • Step 1: Navigate to the NLM Index by going to https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals
  • Step 2: Enter the name of your journal in the search box. Make sure to keep your journal title in quotation marks (as shown below) to ensure easier searching!
  • Step 3: Locate the record for the journal you need and look for the "NLM Title Abbreviation" (as shown below)
