No Public Skating Today--Arena Roof Unsafe

by Unknown User on 2012-03-21T00:00:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

“Taylor Hockey Arena Collapses: Damage Estimated at $100,000” read a headline in Norwich University’s alumni newspaper, The Record, in Spring 1969.  The roof of the former hockey arena had caved in on the morning of Tuesday, March 4, 1969.  Several days earlier buckling of the roof had been noticed and crews began removing snow.

The architectural firm, Milton Crandell & Associates, was consulted about repairs and the cause of the roof collapse. The university photographer, Homer Smith, supplied Crandell with these photographs of the collapsed building and snapped trusses.

Last December, Crandell’s records of projects involving Norwich University buildings, including the work on Taylor Arena were given to the NU Archives.  Ask to see the Milton Lee Crandell records for more information.
