David Currid speaking. da

Lt. Colonel David Currid graduated after an industrious academic career from Norwich University in 1976. During his service in the Army, he was deployed both during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq and Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. During these deployments from 1991 and 1993, Lt. Colonel Currid took over 250 photographs that construct a photo-journal of his experiences and thoroughly document his life while serving. These photographs express his comradery with fellow soldiers, interest in local culture and people, and evidence of the constant dangers that existed for those in Iraq and Somalia.

This is not a curated or edited collection, which adds to its appeal. The images that were created before digital photography and are at times out of focus, taken from a window, or the film sustained injury, adding to realism. Paired with the incredible is the mundane – everyday tasks that continue in extraordinary circumstances. Perhaps the most moving images are of Lt. Colonel Currid’s happy return home and of the appreciation he and others received for their service.

The Norwich University Archives is grateful to have received these important artifacts, and we were thrilled to be able to digitize them so that everyone can appreciate Lt. Colonel Currid’s efforts in documenting the life of a soldier during these events. Recently, Lt. Colonel Currid contributed additional context for a selection of photos included in the collection that were added to the descriptions for the photographs on our website.

Additional donations were also made by Lt. Colonel Currid to our partner, the Sullivan Museum and History Center at Norwich University.
