Football Rivalry with UVM

by Unknown User on 2012-10-05T00:00:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

The story of football at NU can be told through many different records in the archives. Alumni and student newspapers are one place where a lot of detailed information is buried.

This anecdote of a football game with UVM in 1917 was shared with me by our indexer, Carol Frenier. Carol is currently working on indexing early NU newspapers the Reveille and Record. The rivalry between U. V. M. and Norwich on the playing field is evident throughout the years. This was true even in wartime. An interesting verse from the song "Our First Sargeant" appeared in the December 1917 Reveille:

If I had a daughter

I'd dress her up in green

And send her to U. V. M.

To coach the football team.

If I had a son, sir

I'd send him to old N. U.

To yell "To h--- with U. V. M."

As his daddy used to do.

The football rivalry with UVM continued for may years past this publication. The souvenir program cover featured in this post is one example of many years of artwork on the covers of Norwich football programs.
