Library Research Lesson: Finding Primary Source Materials

This lesson looks at what primary sources are, their value to the historian, and discusses different methods of locating them.

Searching with Google

In this example, I'm going to show how to search for primary sources through Google and continue to search for diaries from World War II.

You'll find that the web has tons of excellent resources for primary sources. Depending on your topic, the web may be the only place you can find primary sources in some instances.

  • It's extremely important to evaluate the providers of these sources.
  • Typically, things from .edu and .gov sites are fairly reliable, but still critically evaluate all sources you find on the web.
