The credit for establishing the NU yearbook, The War Whoop, belongs to cadets Harry Moseley and Fred Thomas, both members of the class of 1895. The first college annual was published soon after the 1895 commencement.

Many of us have wondered about the origin of the name, The War Whoop. According to Harry Moseley, both faculty and cadets were invited to submit a suitable name for the publication and then he and Thomas would select the name they felt to be the best. Commandant, Henry Clay Keene, 24th Infantry U.S.A., came up with the winning name.

Moseley and Thomas hoped the junior class would continue to publish an annual; however, as the initial publication was financially unsuccessful, another yearbook was not published until 1906. On Washington’s birthday of that year, cadet Charles Hartwell, took up the reins and resumed publication of the yearbook. A more assertive solicitation of advertising revenue kept the War Whoop financially viable. For more than 100 years, with a few exceptions, The War Whoop, has remained an important annual record of student life at Norwich.
