ADA Accessibility of Digital Library Resources

ADA Compliant Databases

The majority of the library databases come from three companies, EBSCO, ProQuest and JSTOR.  These databases make reasonable efforts to adhere to the policy and guidelines for the Section 508 requirements.

EBSCO

EBSCO

All HTML Full Text articles in EBSCO databases have a text-to-speech option, however, many articles are not available in HTML.  While EBSCO itself is ADA compliant, many of our older PDFs are not.  Native PDFs that were sent directly from the publisher are compatible with screen reading software, but the older image-only PDFs cannot be read by accessibility tools.

ProQuest

Many ProQuest documents are ADA compliant. However, older PDFs (identified as ‘Scanned image PDFs’) are not accessible to screen readers.

JStor

JSTOR image based PDFs have been automatically tagged so that they can be read with screen readers like JAWS.
