Book reviews can be an excellent resource for getting familiar with the scholarly literature on a particular topic, or deciding what to read next. This guide will help you find quality book reviews through library databases.

About JSTOR

JSTOR provides many full-text scholarly articles in different fields but does not provide access to the most current years; instead, coverage usually ends about 3-5 years ago, depending on the journal.

Conducting a Search

The screenshot examples below show a search for reviews of John Adams by David McCullough.

  • Use quotes to search for words together as a phrase ("john adams").
  • Check the box next to Reviews under Item Type to show only book reviews in search results.
  • Click the Submit Advanced Search button to retrieve search results.

I put my keywords in quotation marks to search for the words together as a phrase and checked Reviews from the options under Item Type.

  • Results are automatically sorted by relevance, so the most relevant articles are displayed first in the list of results.
  • To read an a review, click on the Download PDF button and accept JSTOR's terms.
